about

Síbín Vol. 1 is a charity compilation featuring exclusive collaborations between some of the leading figures in the UK and beyond, responding to the question ‘What does identity mean to you?’ The album artwork was created by Oakland-based musician, designer and artist Pacific Yew. Profits from the album will be split between The Black Curriculum & Blackfriars Settlement.

“Síbín Vol. 1 is an attempt to highlight some of the amazing individuals in the creative community at this time;.. to show the importance of community and collaboration. As amazing as we are as individuals there’s also another power that comes from working together and acting from a community mindset.”

This community mindset is documented through the unique collaborations and a corresponding fanzine that features visual poetry, photography, artwork and design, more sonic offerings, and a variety of creative impulses. Contributions come from various artistic visionaries such as Emma Warren, Brother Portrait, Rago Foot, Annie Tobin, Mr Trapart + more.

This community spirit was extended in early 2022 in collaboration with Brixton youth music project Raw Material. Anja Ngozi, Lexy Morvaridi, poet Belinda Zhawi (MA.MOYO), and artist And Is Phi ran a week of workshops with young people aged between 18-25 to explore themes of identity and creative collectives, encouraging the young people to think about what their identity means to them and working collaboratively. The workshops included a guest appearance from journalist and author Emma Warren to help further the young people's experiences and network of resources.

The profits from the album will be split between The Black Curriculum - a UK based social enterprise whose mission is to embed the teaching of Black British History within the national curriculum, empowering all young people (3-25) with a sense of cultural, national and racial identity and belonging in the UK and internationally; and Blackfriars Settlement, which has been working with the local community to make life better in the north of Southwark, for over 130 years.
